Acted as an interpreter for the Japanese Army during the Sino-Japanese War (1894-95). After the war entered the service of the Japanese Government in Formosa. Later founded Kanto Yoko Company in Mukden to exploit Mongolia and soon became a prominent businessman in Manchuria and chairman of Mukden Chamber of Commerce. When Chang Hsueh-liang formed an anti-Japanese bloc he organized the Nihon- jinkai (Japanese Union) to counteract it.
