Sulpicius Apollinaris

Background

Nothing is known about his life exept he flourished in the 2nd century AD. He was born in Ancient Carthage, Tunisia.

He came from the patrician clan of Sulpicius.

Career

He taught Pertinax, himself a teacher of grammar before he was emperor, and Aulus Gellius, who speaks of him in the highest terms.

He is the reputed author of the metrical arguments to the Aeneid and to the plays of Terence and (probably) Plautus. (J. W. Beck, De Sulpicio Apollinari, 1884).

He died in Rome.

Achievements

• Sulpicius Apollinaris was a well-known Roman grammarian, the teacher of Avla Gellius and Emperor Pertinax. He was approached for advice, including people who occupied the first ranks in the state.
