Career
Sumiaki Toyohara was appointed chief musician to the Imperial Court during the Muromachi Period and taught sho (ancient Japanese flute). Toward his last years, when sick, he composed Taigensho, one of the last of the great traditional music. He was also a brilliant waka poet.
Personality
Considered the greatest musician of his time, a story says that one moon the night after returning from a stroll from Hitayama Hill he lost his way and suddenly found himself surrounded by a pack of wolves. Undaunted, the legend says, he began playing the flute and the wolves were so entranced with the divine melody that they did not attack him.
