Went through Zulu War, 1879.
Was present at the attack and capture of Sekukunni’s stronghold as Assistant Instructor to Bearer Column, Transvaal War, 1881-1882. In Standerton during siege.
Kachin Expedition, 1892-1893. Attack on Fort Siva; given the Victoria Cross for conspicuous bravery during the attack.
Took command of fort after death of Captain Morton, officer commanding.
Was medical officer to the Franco-British Boundary Commission to the Mekong River, 1894-1895. Medical Officer to British-Chinese Boundary Commission on Burma Frontier, 1898-1899. Acted as B.M.’s Commissioner during absence of Sir Scott.
Principal Medical Officer Bareilly Brigades, India, and Honourable Surgeon to Viceroy.
