Susan Jill Harsin was born on February 10, 1951, in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. She is the daughter of Charles Duane and Mary Margaret Harsin.
Harsin graduated from Southwest Missouri State University (present-day Missouri State University) with a Bachelor of Arts in 1973. She also holds a Master of Arts (1974) and a Doctor of Philosophy (1981) from the University of Iowa.
Jill Harsin joined the Colgate University in 1982 as a scholar of French social and gender history. Her specialties are in European history, the history of France and the French Revolution, and women's history. She has both published in and served on the editorial board of the premier journal French Historical Studies.
Harsin has served in many important capacities at the Colgate University, including chairing the history department and serving on the Committee on Promotion and Tenure, the Colgate Research Council, the Personnel Review Committee, and the search committee for the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer.
She is the author of "Policing Prostitution in Nineteenth-Century Paris" (1985) and "Barricades: The War of the Streets in Revolutionary Paris, 1830-1848" (2002).
Most notably, she has served as interim dean of the faculty and interim university president. She currently serves as a chair of the Bicentennial Committee.
