In 1969 Susan got a Bachelor of Arts cum laude from Goucher College.
Susan Rabiner began her career as an assistant editor at Random House, New York, where she served from 1969 to 1972. She then became an editor at the University of Oxford Press, New York. She held this position from 1973 to 1979. In 1980 Rabiner was promoted to a position as a senior editor at the University of Oxford Press.
In 1986 Susan started to work at the St. Martin's Press, New York, as a senior editor. From 1987 to 1990 she held the same post at Pantheon Books, New York.
In 1990 she was a senior editor, editorial director in 1995, and then, in 1996, a vice president until 1997 at Basic Books, Inc., New York.
Rabiner is also founder with freelance editor/writer husband Alfred Fortunato of Rabiner Literary Agency, Inc., and has worked with best-selling authors such as Iris Chang, George Chauncey, John Allen Paulos, Daniel Schacter, Lawrence Krauss, and Pulitzer prize winner Herbert Bix.
Susan is the author of the book "Thinking Like Your Editor: How to Write Great Serious Nonfiction and Get It Published," published in 2002. This work divulges the trade secrets of an experienced literary agent to the would-be author of serious nonfiction. It advises on virtually everything necessary for acceptance and publication in the genre - from writing the proposal and shaping the argument to cover design and book reviews.
