Bonge took courses at Statens Bibliotekskole in Oslo, Norway, from 1965 to 1976, and attended the basic course in social anthropology at University of Bergen in 1968.
She was an archivist at the University Library in Bergen, where she has worked since 1947. Around 1964-65 she began to care for the library's collection of old photographs.
She served as first vice president of Norsk Fotohistorisk Forening in 1976-77. She received the Kongens Fortjentsmedalje i gull (King's medal of honor) in 1979.
In her work of collecting and preserving old photographs, she tried to "impress on writers, historians, and scientists the value of the photographs as primary sources" and not just illustrations. She was also interested in the life and working conditions of the historic photographers.
Bonge is a founding member (1975) of Norsk Fotohistorisk Forening.
