From 1967 to 1968 Mertz worked at Claude Rodriguez Studio in Paris, France. She worked at Ole Bjork Studio in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 1969 to 1971.
Since 1972 Mertz was a freelance photographer, taking pictures of theater groups, musicians, feminist groups and old shops in Copenhagen, Denmark. Also, she makes photographic backgrounds for television cartoons.
