Susumu Sato was born in 1845. He was the eldest son of Seiemon Takawa in Hitachi Province (Ibaraki Prefecture).

Susumu Sato was born in 1845. He was the eldest son of Seiemon Takawa in Hitachi Province (Ibaraki Prefecture).
He was a disciple of Shochu Sato and was later adopted by him. Went to Germany to study surgery (1869). He was the first Japanese student abroad to study at his own expense.
In the war of Meiji Restoration (1868), he was director of the Imperiai army's hospital. After returning from abroad (1875), he helped his father ill running his Juntendo Hospital. Was appointed an army surgeon (1887) and took his Doctor of Medicine (1888).
At the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War (1894), he was attached to the Imperial headquarters in Hiroshima and concurrently to the reserve military hospital there. When China's peace envoy Li Hung-chang was wound by a Japanese would-be assassin, he treated him.
He was appointed Army Surgeon General(1895). During the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), he was again attached to, the Imperial Headquarters in Hiroshima. Was created a Baron (1906).
