Sven Eloy Zea Sjoberg is a Colombian marine biologist, professor, and researcher whose work focuses on the taxonomy, ecology, biogeography, and biotechnology of marine sponges, as well as coral-reef ecology. He has taught and conducted research at the National University of Colombia and INVEMAR and authored the reference work Esponjas del Caribe colombiano.
Background
Sven Eloy Zea Sjoberg was born on July 31, 1957, in Cali, in Colombia's Valle del Cauca Department. His parents were Margarita and Horacio. His professional identity has generally appeared in scientific publications as Sven Zea, while his full name is Sven Eloy Zea Sjoberg.
Education
Zea studied Biology at the University Jorge Tadeo Lozano, completing his bachelor's degree in 1980. He pursued graduate training in Biology at the National University of Colombia, where he received a Master of Science degree in 1983. He then studied Biological Sciences at the University of Texas in Austin and earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1990. This progression from marine biology training in Colombia to doctoral study in the United States preceded his long-term academic and research career in marine science.
Career
Zea began his professional career as a lecturer at the University of Magdalena and as a research associate at INVEMAR during the early 1980s. He worked as a research associate at INVEMAR from 1982 to 1984 and served as a teaching assistant at the University of Texas from 1985 to 1986 while completing doctoral studies. From 1988 he held academic appointments at the National University of Colombia, progressing from assistant to associate professor and later becoming a full professor. He also worked as a junior investigator at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Massachusetts. His association with INVEMAR continued through research and coordination activities in marine biological sciences, while his National University work became centered on the Caribbean campus and the Institute of Marine Science Studies, CECIMAR, in Santa Marta. At the National University he has taught and coordinated graduate training in marine biology. His research has concentrated on sponge taxonomy, systematics, ecology, biogeography, biotechnology, and bioactivity, together with coral-reef and coastal-ecosystem ecology. He has contributed to the description and documentation of Caribbean sponge diversity and has served as a recognized specialist in sponge identification for regional biodiversity resources.
Achievements
Established a sustained research program on the taxonomy, systematics, ecology, biogeography, and biotechnology of marine sponges in the Colombian Caribbean and adjacent Caribbean regions.
Authored Esponjas del Caribe colombiano, a 286-page 1987 monograph documenting the taxonomy and distribution of sponges from the Colombian Caribbean.
Contributed to the description and scientific documentation of new sponge species and to research on sponge recruitment, coral-reef communities, marine natural products, and sponge bioactivity.
Served as a recognized sponge-taxonomy specialist for Caribbean marine-biodiversity resources and research collaborations.

Membership
Zea has been associated with the Association of Marine Biologists, the Colombian Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Council of Marine Sciences, and Sigma Xi. He became a corresponding member of the Colombian Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences; his corresponding-membership work included a 2001 presentation on distribution patterns of sponges in southwestern Caribbean reef complexes.
