Sylvius Gerard Marie Rozendal was born on July 4 1928 in Willemstad, Netherlands Antilles.
He was educated at Peter Stuyvesant College in Curasao and received further schooling in Geneva.
He joined the Democratic Party in 1958, was a leader of the Democratic Party delegation there between 1963 and 1967. He became a member of the Staten (Parliament) of Netherlands Antilles in 1966. In 1969 he was Minister President and minister of finance. He was again Minister President between 1977 and 1979 until the Curasao Democratic Party suffered the worst defeat in its history. Thereafter, he continued merely to be the party's leader.
