Tadamitsu Nakayama was born in 1845. He was the third son of Tadayasu.

He was a Court noble, he was a chamberlain in the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Adept at learning as well as martial arts, he mingled with Loyalist samurai and worked for the cause of restoring the Imperial regime and expulsion of foreigners. In 1863, he went to Nagato Province (Yamaguchi Prefecture) to plan the overthrowing of the Shogunate. In August the same year, when Emperor Komei decided to visit Yamato (Nara Prefecture), he led the Tenchu-gumi band of Loyalists including Torataro Yoshimura to Gojo in Yamato, where the band revolted against the Shogunate. His plan miscarried because the Emperor suddenly called off his Yamato visit. Defeated, he hid himself in Osaka but was captured and killed.
