Tadao Yamamoto graduated from Tokyo University (1928).
Tadao Yamamoto became professor of Hiroshima Higher Normal School (1929); assistant professor (1936) and then professor of Hiroshima University of Science and Literature and professor of Osaka Women's University and thereafter was appointed professor of Kobe University (1954). He became interested in study of English stylists and published "A Study of English Stylists."
For many years pursued studies on language of Charles Dickens and completed "The Growth and System of the Language of Charles Dickens" (1944). In this work he took up the language of Dickens as a model of English prose, making observation of development and structure of the author's language. Upon being introduced abroad the book caused considerable repercussions. For the Japanese version of "Dickens' English" published in 1951, the author received a doctorate in literature, and further received the Japan Academy Award (1953). Also published commentary on "David Copperfield" of Charles Dickens.
