Tadatsugu Toda was born in 1531 in Japan.
After his father was killed in battle by Nobunaga Oda (1559) Tadatsugu Toda led a retired life, till the Ikkoshu rebellion against Ieyasu Tokugawa broke out in Mikawa (1563) when he distinguished himself by suppressing it. After that he became a follower of Ieyasu and fought gallantly fo r him in many battles, including the Mikatagahara and Nagashino battles.
When Ieyasu moved to the Kanto District he was made Lord of Shimoda Castle at Izu (Shizuoka Prefecture) with a fief of 5,000 koku of rice. When rumors reached him that Ieyasu would also take part in the expedition to Korea he hastened to Nagoya in Hizen (Nagasaki Prefecture) to join him in spite of his advancing years. It is said that when Hideyoshi Toyotomi heard of this, he praised him greatly.
