Taira no Tokitada was born in 1127. He was the son of Tokinobu.
He became powerful after his sister, Tokiko, married Kiyomori. He was exiled to Izumo Province (Shimane Prefecture) for attempting to make Prince Norihito, younger brother of Emperor Nijo, the Crown Prince, in collusion with Yorimori Taira (1161). Then he was called back to Kyoto and appointed Kurodo-no-Kami (Head of the Imperial Treasury) (1165). He was appointed Chugii-taibu (Chief Stewart to chugu) (1178), after having successfully appeased the rebellious priests of the Enryakuji Temple (1177). Because he advised the Emperor on conferment of Court ranks, he was nicknamed Taira Karnpaku (Adviser to the Emperor). He then was appointed Gon-dainagon (Vice-Minister) (1183). He was relieved of this post when the Tairas began retreating westward at the attack of Yoshinaka Kiso. After the Battle of Dannoura he sought to be pardoned because of his exploit of having safeguarded the Imperial Treasures during the battle but Yoritomo exiled him to Noto Peninsula (Ishikawa Prefecture), where he died.
