Tairei Suda was born in 1825. He was the son of a physician in Shinano Province (Nagano Prefecture).

Studied Western medicine under Dokai Hayashi and surgery and obstetrics under Taizen Sato in Edo.
Tairei Suda began practicing in his home town in 1851. He further studied in Edo under Tokai and Gemboku Ito by order of the lord of his clan.
He amputated a leg of a gangrene patient under chloroform anesthesia in 1861, this being the first time chloroform was used for a surgical operation in Japan.
After the Meiji Restoration (1868), he served in the Education and Home ministries.
