His highest rank was maegashira 8. He retired in May 2006 and became an elder in the Japan Sumo Association under the name Nishiiwa, coaching at Naruto stable. He took over as stablemaster of Naruto when the acting stablemaster (ex-yokozuna Takanosato) died in November 2011.
