Background
Takehiko Kurushima was born in 1874 in Mori Town, Kusu District (currently Kusu Town) in Oita Prefecture. He was a direct descendent of Kurushima Michifusa, and the grandson of the last head of the Mori Domain, Kurushima Michiyasu.

In 1894 Takehiko Kurushima joined the army to take part in Sino-Japanese War, after returning home he met Sazanami Iwaya, a famous writer of juvenile stories. Subsequently he began writing juvenile stories for magazine Shorten Sekai (Boys World). In 1903 together with Sazanami he organized first meeting of juvenile stories society named Otogi Club (Otogi - ancient or poetic term for juvenile story) at Methodist Church in Yokohama. Then Takehiko Kurushima went to the front in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). After returning home he was more active than ever before in narration of juvenile stories.
Takehiko Kurushima founded Sawarabi Kindergarten at Aoyama, Tokyo in 1910. He was chief director of National Juvenile Story Writers Association, he also trained junior writers in that field. He made several tours to Europe and America, during them he was awarded by the Danish Government.
He won the official commendation as person of cultural merit.
