Tagawa Takenobu was born in 1818.
A retainer of the Zeze Clan (Shiga Prefecture), Tagawa was a samurai with a fief of 120 koku a year. When the clan was in a state of confusion toward the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate, he led a group advocating loyalty to the Imperial family. When Emperor Komei announced his decision of proceeding to Yamato Province (Nara Prefecture), Takenobu advised his lord to follow the Emperor. His friends left the clan to work for the Imperialist cause and he was imprisoned by anti-Imperialist elements in the- clan and was forced to commit suicide.
