Graduated from Tokyo University (1936).
Became assistant professor (1941) and then professor (1952) at his alma mater. Toured Europe (1954). Awarded Gakushi-in-sno (Japan Academy Prize) in 1951 for his thesis “Geomagnetical Study of Magnetic Property of Stones and Rocks.” Published series of unique papers on volcanic activities of Mt. Mihara on Oshima Islands. Books include the series titled Ikiteiru Chikyu Jishin-to Tsunami (The Living Earth, Earthquake and Tidal Wave). Went to the South Pole on board the Soya as leader of the first Japanese Antarctic Observation Team (1956-57). Served as a technical official of Geographical Survey Institute of Ministry of Construction and member of Japan Physical Society and several other academic organizations.
