Graduated from Moscow State V. I. Lenin Pedagogical Institute (1957-1962), speciality "teacher of history, Russian language and literature, and physical education".
Lev Kofman started his career as a lecturer at the Department of Physical Education of Moscow State V. I. Lenin Pedagogical Institute, and then continued as a senior lecturer at the Department of Physical Education of Moscow Institute of Civil Engineering named after V.V. Kuybyshev.
From 1966 to 1971 he was deputy director of the sports and training center "Nauka".
From 1971 to 2017 Lev Borisovich was the director of the Central School of Higher Sports Skills, which in 1988 was reorganized into Moscow City Physical Education and Sports Association, and since 1991 he was also appointed deputy chairman of the Moscow Committee of Education.
Lev Borisovich was president of Freestyle Federation of Russia (since 1994), member of the Executive Committee of the Russian Olympic Committee (since 1995), chairman of the International coordinating Committee of World Youth Games (1998).
Since March 1999 he was chairman of the Committee of Physical Culture and Sports of the Government of Moscow.
Lev Borisovich was active in educational work, heading since 1987 the Department of Physical Education of Moscow State V. I. Lenin Pedagogical Institute.
