He studied while still young under Chu Shun-shui, a Chinese scholar, at the order of Lord Mitsukuni Tokugawa of Mito.
Career
In 1693, he became director of the Shoko-kan (History Institute) of the Mito Clan and chief compiler of Dai Nihonshi, or History of Great Japan, at the order of Mitsukuni
