Education
He studied painting at an early age under Kaisen Oda, then gave it up for the next 16 years during which nothing was heard of him as he set out on an aimless tour of the country, in the course of which he suddenly took interest in lacquer and began studying its technique under Ikkokusai.
Career
Under the care of an uncle who was a priest in Tosa (Kochi Prefecture), Hosui settled there and took up the manufacture of lacquer ware seriously. His work was of high quality and soon became famous and was known after its maker as Hosui Makie.
During his middle-age he reverted to painting, and again distinguished himself, his works of art winning him many prizes at several exhibitions.
After his death, his disciples added new designs to his works, and they are still known today as Tosa Shikki lacquer ware.
