Career
Tani Jichu was first a priest with the name of Jichu and studied the doctrines of Chutzu, a Chinese philosopher. Discarding the priestly robes he became a Confucian and took active interest in the promotion of education. Among his disciples were Sanshi Ono, Kenzan Nonaka and Ansai Yamazaki.
