(Children know the imaginative possibilities to be found i...)
Children know the imaginative possibilities to be found in an empty cardboard carton. Marie may not look like a fairy-tale princess, but she knows she is one because of all the extraordinary things that seem to happen to her - things like finding a magical red umbrella and a huge cardboard box and tumbling into the enchanted world of Boxland for a wild river ride and a run-in with a royal lion. Quotations:
"Writing and illustrating children’s books allows me to create a world in which I can ask any question there may be. The questions may be important or unimportant. The children who get into this world by reading and seeing the book then tell me the answers. That means they tell me stories I never put into it. This magic is what I like, and any subject can be used for it."
"I also value books that give answers to children who may have questions of their own, but I leave those to other clever persons. Meanwhile, I try to make some doubtful riddles, hoping that someday I will be a real magician who can make sorrow disappear from children’s hearts and make cheerfulness appear there instead. That’s the purpose of children’s books."
