2006
commentator figure skater actress
Tara Lipinski was born on June 10, 1982 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. She is a daughter of Jack Lipinski, a lawyer and oil executive, and Patricia Lipinski.
Tara Lipinski spent her early childhood in Sewell, New Jersey. Her path to the ice began from roller skates at the age of three. The girl showcased such a talent and dedication that was enrolled at private lessons the next year. The twice-a-week lessons of Lipinski soon came to daily practice sessions. She even joined a roller hockey team as the squad's only female member. Tara earned about fifty medals in rolling skating, and by 1991, she grabbed the title of the Roller Skating National Champion in the primary division.
Lipinski wore figure skates for the first time at six. Her first experience on the ice was full of fallings but after forty-five minutes of practice, however, the young talented roller skater even completed several jumps. Within a week, Lipinski began figure skating lessons at the University of Delaware, which sponsored one of the country's best skating programs. She trained hard applying her roller skating abilities to the ice and soon placed second in a local figure skating event.
Upon her family's relocation to Houston, Texas in 1991 related to her father's promotion, Lipinski concentrated only on figure skating. She woke up every day at three o'clock in the morning to have enough time for three skating lessons a day before school, on a public rink at the Houston Galleria mall. The following year, Lipinski and her mother came back to Delaware so that she could train full time, while her father remained in Texas. It was supposed to be a one- or two-year separation, but after coach Richard Callaghan of the Detroit Figure Skating Club had a vacancy for a new student in 1995, Tara and her mother relocated again, to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The separation was real stress for the family according to Tara herself.
In between the relocations, Lipinski had her first major victories, at the 1994 United States Olympic Festival and in the international competition, the Blue Swords, in Chemnitz, Germany. Switching into the junior ranks, she won the silver medal at the 1995 United States Figure Skating Junior Championships.
Under Callaghan Lipinski honed her skills to such an extent that she managed to complete the triple-loop jump, the combination that no other female skater had done before. The long-hour workouts and a busy athletic schedule didn't disturb Lipinski from excelling at school. She graduated from River Oaks Academy, a high school in Houston, on May 18, 2000.
Tara Lipinski debuted at the senior level at the 1996 United States Figure Skating Championships in San Jose. Although Michelle Kwan won the gold medal, Lipinski placed third which provided her with a place in the national team to that year's International Skating Union's (ISU) World Championship. At the event, Lipinski encountered her first major setback. Her performance in the short program placed her twenty-third and almost disqualified her from the final skate, reserved only for the top twenty-four competitors. However, she was almost nearly perfect in a free program and ended up in fifteenth place overall.
A year later, Lipinski won Kwan back at the United States National Championship. While Kwan did several mistakes in her free program, fourteen-year-old Tara took the gold medal largely due to the triple-loop jump, which she had mastered only at the beginning of the season. The youngest-ever champion of the United States, Lipinski wasn't however considered as the favorite for the upcoming World Championship, and instead, most observers expected Kwan or Irina Slutskaya of Russia to take the gold medal. After Kwan and Slutskaya both made mistakes in the short program, Lipinski entered the free skate in the first place. With a perfect free skate program, Lipinski placed second to Kwan in that discipline, but finished as the first-place skater overall. The victory made Lipinski the youngest-ever female World Champion in figure skating.
Lipinski failed her triple-loop jump in the short program at the 1998 United States National Championship that deprived her of the gold medal and put her only fourth. The performance of Michelle Kwan at the event which was considered as one of the best in the history of the sport automatically made her the favorite of the Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. However, the status of an underdog at the major sport event of the four years played right into Lipinski's hand as it motivated the young skater to perform the highly impressive jumping display in her long program. Lipinski added a triple-salchow, half-loop, triple toe loop combination to her famous triple-loop combination jump and was placed ahead of Kwan by six judges out of nine.
In that same year, triumphant for Lipinski and historical for the whole figure skating community, the youngest-ever Olympic champion of the time announced in April, in a Today Show, that she would leave the amateur ranks and turn professional. Despite some residual pain from two hip surgeries that she had undergone at the end of the 1990s, Lipinski joined the tour of Stars on Ice and resumed competing at events such as the 1999 World Professional Championship, where she took the gold medal.
Besides, the young retired star of figure skating appeared on the screen, in particular, in the drama TV series Touched by an Angel, The Young and the Restless soap opera, and the television movie Ice Angel. Her commercial endorsements of the time included deals to promote Snapple beverages, the DKNY children's clothing line, and awareness of deep-vein thrombosis. The most recent TV projects in which she took part are the sitcom Superstore, comedy-drama Kidding, in both of which she appeared as herself, and a 2018 animated sitcom Family Guy.
Lipinski has also appeared as a television guest-star, as well as in talk shows and a biographical CBS special. She has penned several books as well including Tara Lipinski: Triumph On Ice released in 1998. Lipinski has hosted a five-city fashion show for Limited Too called Passion for Fashion. In 2002, Lipinski retired from professional figure skating.
Serving as a commentator is also a large part of Lipinski's off-ice activity. After signing with the U.S. Figure Skating's streaming service Ice Network in 2009, she started commenting various figure skating sport events and competitions broadcast by the network, including the international ones. At the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Lipinski and another former figure skater Johnny Weir and sports commentator Terry Gannon were united in the network's second team of figure skating commentators for live broadcasts.
In Autumn of that same year, the triumvirate succeeded Scott Hamilton, Sandra Bezic, and Tom Hammond, the primary figure skating commentators of NBC. Lipinski, Weir and Gannon were also involved in the 2018 Winter Olympics as analysts and potential hosts of the closing ceremonies in Pyeongchang.
Lipinski and Weir have also served as analysts, commentators and hosts on a variety of non-sport projects, including the Oscars, NBC Sports's (as "fashion, lifestyle, and social media correspondents") Beverly Hills Dog Show, the National Dog Show, the Kentucky Derby, and the Super Bowl.
Tara Lipinski managed to collect national, world, and Olympic titles in figure skating despite her incredibly short career at the senior level which lasted only a little more than two years. In fact, the young figure skating star proved capable of becoming not just a superb technical skater, but an artistic one as well. The most outstanding jumper of her day, Lipinski's command of the ice allowed her to make the transition to a professional skating career at the age of fifteen.
At the age of 15 years and 255 days, Lipinski became the youngest female to capture the Olympic figure-skating title, surpassing the previous record, held for 70 years by Sonja Henie who was 60 days older than Lipinski when she earned her gold medal. Lipinski's status in the history of figure skating as the youngest-ever American and Olympic champion would remain the record forever because of the new age limits established by the International Skating Union. It was somehow her success at such a young age that pushed the drive to rethink rules.
Praised worldwide for her jumping ability, Lipinski was however criticized by many for pushing the sport away from its artistic side to mere technical performances. Though it should be noted that the impressive triple jumps remained on trend even after the rule adjustments. Four years after Lipinski's legendary Olympic performance, sixteen-year-old Sarah Hughes won the gold medal at the event held in Salt Lake City by completing two triple-jump combinations.
Lipinski was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2006.

2002Tara Lipinski is a devoted Catholic. The figure skating star has considered St. Therese of Lisieux as her patron saint since 1994. At the Winter Olympics in Nagano, she was honored with a medal of St. Therese by Reverend Vince Kolo, a Catholic priest from Pittsburgh. The medal, as well as her winning costume at the Olympics, were donated to an exhibit shortly after the event.
According to Ann Rogers-Melnick of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Tara dedicated a playroom in the children's ward of a Detroit hospital to Saint Therese. Lipinski also confessed to Rogers-Melnick that the roses, a symbol of St. Therese, always accompanied her in the most difficult and the happiest times.
Tara Lipinski weighed in on Russia's controversial "gay propaganda" laws. She said that she was sad that the nation's political stance had overshadowed much of the excitement ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Tara stated: "It's unfortunate that this is happening because all these athletes have worked so hard, no matter what your sexual preference is. They have worked their entire lives for this moment, it doesn't matter if you're gay or straight."
Tara Lipinski has been actively involved in various kinds of charity and philanthropic work since her athletic triumph. Following her second hip surgery in 2002, she became a spokesperson for an awareness campaign for deep-vein thrombosis, an often fatal complication from surgeries like the ones she had undergone. She has also used her media popularity to support many philanthropic projects. So, the winnings at the Wheel of Fortune television game where she appeared as a guest were donated to the Boys and Girls Club of America. Herself, Lipinski established her own tour, Tara Lipinski's Miracle Match Tour, to support the policies and initiatives in the cure of leukemia. She has also participated in the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign and has collaborated with Children's Circle of Care, Make-a-Wish Foundation, and Candie's Foundation, among others.
Quotations:
"The sound of the blades on the ice in the morning is like smelling fresh coffee."
"A lot of skaters hole themselves up in hotels and focus – and that's great, and that may work for them. But for me, having the Olympic experience was as great as winning the medal. I have so many memories of living in the village and meeting other athletes, seeing other sports, and feeling the energy. It's so magical."
"Obviously, the competition at an Olympics, the emotions are running high, and the stakes are higher for these athletes, so it does bring an incredible, palpable excitement and emotion into the building."
"We need to remind people how fun skating is, how quirky skating is. If we went on TV and overlooked the cold, hard truths and the quirkiness, I don't think that's bringing anything to the fans."
"Skating, like all other sports, has an element of strategy."
"Acting is easier than skating in a way and harder in other aspects. In skating, you get one chance, and with acting you get to do it over and over."
"Most athletes won't push a sport forward unless they have the incentive to do so – let alone when the structures of a sport have been set up to actually incentivize them to hold back."
"It used to be that I wanted to be taller. Once I made 5-foot-1, I was happy."
"My parents gave me the gift of love and support. They told me never to question what my heart wanted and to be proud of who I was as an individual."
"Teens should always remember they are unique, special, and bring something to the world that no one else can."
"Whether you're an athlete or a student, having an adult who believes in you and can give you advice and wisdom that is coming from a place of experience is an incredible asset to help guide you through your young life."
"You have to train your mind just as much as you train your body."
"Over the years, God and St. Therese have kept me going no matter how bad things were."
Lipinski faced intense media scrutiny right from the beginning of her athletic career. The media focused not only on her considerable talent, but also on the question of whether her parents should have allowed her to pursue an amateur figure-skating career at such a young age. Her parents responded that such an ardence was entirely based on the self-derived motivation of their daughter and that they carefully watched over her well being to prevent her from becoming burned out.

During his career as an amateur figure skater which lasted from 1996 to 2013, Johnny Weir became World Junior Champion one time, won two Olympic gold medals and two Grand Prix Final bronze medals, and became United States National Champion three consecutive times.
Lipinski has once said that Weir is her "long-lost soul mate that she met late in life" and that she "can't imagine her life without him" as a friend.
In addition to Tara Lipinski, Callaghan trained World champion and six-time United States national champion, Todd Eldredge, for a long time, and Nicole Bobek who grabbed her national title under his guidance.
