Evgeni Plushenko is a Russian former figure skater. With two Olympic champion's title and four Olympic medals, three World titles and seven European titles, given many trophies from other national and international sports events, he is one of the most successful figure skaters in the history of the sport.
Background
Ethnicity:
Plushenko's father was born in Donetsk, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (present-day Ukraine) and his mother came from Volgograd, Russian SFSR (present-day Russian Federation).
Evgeni Viktorovich Plushenko was born on November 3, 1982 in Dzhamku, Khabarovsk Krai, Russian Federation (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic at the time). He is the youngest child of Viktor Plushenko and Tatiana Plushenko.
Education
Evgeni Plushenko spent the first three years of his life in Dzhamku, Khabarovsk Krai, Russian Federation (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic at the time) where his parents had come from Volgograd to take part in the construction of the Baikal-Amur Mainline. A year after the family moved back to Volgograd, Evgeni's mother enrolled little Evgeni, who was very susceptible to colds, in a figure skating section in order to improve his health.
Plushenko revealed a real talent for skating and he progressed quickly. Trained by Tatiana Skala for his first few years on the ice, he learned to perform the difficult Biellmann spin. In 1990, Evgeni became a ward of Mikhail Khrisanfovich Makoveev under whose guidance he triumphed at his first competition. Three years later, he already could perform the triple jumps roughly, including triple axel.
In 1993, however, the Volgograd ice rink where Evgeni trained was closed as an aftereffect of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. An eleven-year-old boy, Plushenko was obliged to relocate to St. Petersburg all alone, without parents, who remained in Volgograd to continue working and support their son financially. Plushenko's mother joined him only in 1994.
In St. Petersburg, Plushenko began working with skating coach Aleksey Mishin who already trained Alexei Urmanov and Alexei Yagudin, future Olympic Champions. Strongly believing in Evgeni's talent, Mishin honed his new pupil's skills arduously and supported him financially as well, paying rent for his apartment in the city for three years. By 12, Plushenko had perfected his triple jumps and, by 14, he had landed a quad for the first time. His international debut occurred in 1995, at the World Junior Championships and two years later, aged 14, he won the event which took place in Seoul, South Korea.
Plushenko finished school No. 91 of St. Petersburg's Petrogradsky District in 1998. Two years later, he entered the Lesgaft National State University of Physical Education, Sport and Health and graduated in 2005. A year earlier, Plushenko also received a diploma in tourism and hospitality from the Saint Petersburg State University of Engineering and Economics.
Evgeni Plushenko moved into the senior level at the end of the 1990s. He took a silver medal at the European Championships and bronze at the World Championships in 1998 and silver at the World's the following year.
That same year came to be historical for the figure skating community as Plushenko executed cleanly the first triple axel-half loop-triple flip combination in competition. Staying out of the podium the next year at the World Championships, he finally became a World champion in 2001.
After finishing behind his long-time competitor Alexei Yagudin at the Salt Lake Olympics, winning the silver medal, he was obliged to miss that year's World Championships because of injuries. Though, at the Cup of Russia that same year, Plushenko set another record by successfully performing in competition the quadruple toe-triple toe-triple loop combination. In 2003, the Russian figure skater proved his World title. An injured knee and a number of strong opponents at the next year's event didn't disturb him from grabbing his third World title (the second straight).
After the first Olympic Gold medal which came at the 2006 Winter Olympics held in Turin, Italy, Plushenko took a break for three and a half years from competitions. During that hiatus, he joined violinist Edvin Marton to assist Russian singer Dima Bilan, by skating onstage during the latter's performance at Eurovision Song Contest. The Believe song presented to the audience in Belgrade, Serbia, brought victory to Russia.
Plushenko resumed work before the next major sport event of the four years, third for him. At the Vancouver Olympics, he added a silver medal to his collection, placing behind Evan Lysacek of the United States. In March and April of that same year, he took part in a number of figure skating shows. The participation in these exhibition performances without the permission of the Russian figure skating federation was followed by the deprivation of his eligibility officially announced by the International Skating Union on August 23, 2010.
In autumn, Evgeni Plushenko went public with his plans of competing at the 2014 Winter Olympics. He kept on performing in ice shows worldwide and trained for a probable comeback to competitive sport in passing. His 2011 request for reinstatement was approved by the ISU on June 12.
Earning his seventh European title in 2012, Plushenko withdrew from the World's event, again because of an injury, this time a back problem. That same problem became the cause of his withdrawal from the 2013 European Championships after the short program.
The 2014 Winter Olympic Games came to be the last ones for Evgeni in his athletic career. Taking part in the team competition, he won his fourth Olympic medal as a member of the Russian figure skating team which led in the overall ranking. As to singles, Plushenko withdrew from the competition after warm-up, right before the start of the short program, again because of his back problems. Though Plushenko announced his retirement from competitive skating that same day, he retired officially from the sport in March 2017.
Right after retiring, Plushenko got involved in coaching. On April 5, 2017, in Moscow, he established Angels of Plushenko Figure Skating Academy for budding ice skaters. In addition, such figure skaters as Adelina Sotnikova, Anastasia Tarakanova, Serafima Sakhanovich, Stanislava Konstantinova, Ekaterina Ryabova of Azerbaijan, Alexandra Trusova and Alena Kostornaia have been among his wards, as of a coach, at different times.
Plushenko went down in the history of figure skating as one of its greatest representatives. In addition to four Olympic medals, three World titles and seven European titles, he became the Grand Prix Final Champion four times and Russian national champion ten times.
Following the 2010 Winter Olympics, he was the only living single skater to have won medals at three Games. Aged 32, Evgeni became one of the oldest figure skaters to win Olympic gold. His record for the most Olympic medals in figure skating was later surpassed by the Canadian ice dancers Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue. Following the 2012 European championships, Plushenko joined early history figure skaters Ulrich Salchow of Sweden and Karl Schafer of Austria in the record for seven European titles.
Combining power with grace, he was the first person to perform difficult combinations of jumps in competition several times, including the Biellmann spin in senior competition, the quadruple toe-triple toe-triple loop, and triple axel-half loop-triple flip combinations.

Politics
Plushenko was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Saint Petersburg, from A Just Russia political Party, in March 2007. He was a member of the standing committee on social issues. The athlete announced his withdrawal from the Party on December 11, 2011.
During the 2018 presidential campaign, Plushenko was among the members of an informal patriotic movement PutinTeam. He later stated that it was a bad decision on his part to join the movement.
In June 2020, along with his spouse Yana Rudkovskaya and their first son Alexander, Plushenko appeared in a video filmed in support of the amendments to the constitution of the Russian Federation.
Views
Plushenko's exhibition program performed in St. Petersburg in October 2004 and timed to the 10th anniversary of his cooperation with Alexei Mishin was dedicated to the victims of the Beslan school siege, terrorist attack in North Ossetia-Alania. The part of the show's proceeds was channeled to the victims' families.
Quotations:
"My main competitor is myself."
"It doesn't matter what kind of result will be in the end. I already won for myself."
"I try not to think about marks, the first place or gold medal. The most important thing is to show what you are capable of on the ice. The rest will come on its own."
"It's everything for me. Without figure skating, I am nothing."
"I think I was born to be a figure skater, I think it was fate, and I thank God for letting it happen."
"What worries me though, is that after all those victories people don't see me as a human being anymore. I am not a machine, I have a heart beating in my chest – not an engine, there's blood in my veins – not oil. I know pain and fatigue. I can lose but I will strive to win everything."
"Without a quad it's not men's figure skating. [...] I believe that the quad is the future of figure skating. The quad is necessary, that is my opinion."
"I just adore jumping. I do the rest as it is supposed to be done."
"I skate for the fans. It's not as fun without them there supporting me. I get energy from them and I want to skate well for them. They relax me. They make me happy when I skate for them. I feel the Americans like me more and more each time I tour."
Personality
Plushenko began to rival with another Olympic Champion of Russia (future at the time), Alexei Yagudin when they both trained with Alexei Mishin. The rivalry kept on in competitions even after the latter became the ward of notable Russian figure skating coach Tatiana Tarasova in 1998.
