Tei Umejima entered Tokyo Nichinichi Shimbun (newspaper) (1930) and became chief of Fukyu-bu (Circulation Expansion Department) of the Tokyo head office (1945), member of Tokyo Branch of Sogo Kikaku Iinkai (General Planning Committee) and chief of Business Research Department (1946), vice-chief of Business Bureau (1947) and chief of General Affairs Bureau (1949). He became managing director of Mainichi Shimbun (newspaper) (since 1954). Held additional post of director of Fumin Kyokai (Wealthy People's Association).
