Entered the director’s faculty of the Moscow Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (State Film School). First feature film, Magdan's Donkey (1955, with Revaz Chkheidze), was well received both in the Soviet Union and abroad. Awarded a prize in the category of short films at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival.
His next film. Someone Else's Children (1958), brilliantly depicted life in Tbilisi. Other films: Me, Grandma, Iliko and Illarion (1963) (very popular in the Soviet Union). A Necklace For My Beloved (1972).
And The Tree of Wishes, a film version of Georgii Leonidze’s tales about pre-revolutionary country life. In 1987 made a sensation with Repentance, which deals with the repressions of the Stalin era. Competed in 1984 and shelved, but released eventually.
Became a major box office success all over the country. Tickets were sold out for two months ahead in all cinemas, an unprecedented event in Soviet cultural life.
