Background
Tennō Gohanazono was born on July 10, 1419 and was the first son of Gosuko Dajd-Tenno (posthumously granted title of emperor). His mother was Yukiko Minamoto. Before his ascension to the Chrysanthemum Throne, his personal name (imina) was simply Hikohito-shinnō.
Career
In 1428, Gohanazono Tennō became Crown Prince of Emperor Gokomatsu and ascended the Throne. He abdicated in favor of Prince Shigehito (Emperor Gotsuchimikado). During his reign, there were many natural calamities and fighting, the masses often facing famine. The Imperial Palace was left in a state of dilapidation. Court nobles were stricken by poverty and Imperial archives burned.
Gohanazono Tennō passed away on January 18, 1470 at the aged 50. He was buried in Kyoto.
