Tenno Sanjo ascended the throne in 1009 and made Prince Atsuhira his heir apparent. The prince was a grandson of Michinaga Fujiwara. Michinaga often suggested to the Emperor to abdicate by reason of his eye trouble. The Emperor's illness grew worse because of his indignation at Michinaga and abdicated in 1016. Sanjo's reign spanned the years from 1011 through 1016.
