Dexter was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1978.
She has one twin sister, and she describes her ethnicity simply as interracial. She began singing in her church"s gospel choir at the age of 6, and continued until age 14. She began singing background for other artists at age 11, most notably for Simply Red.
At age 13 she signed to Elektra Records, but an album on the label never materalized.
Dexter signed to Warner Brothers Records in 1998 at the age of 19, and she released her eponymous debut album in 1999 (although her debut single, "You"ll Never Mission Maine ("Til I"m Gone)", was released via Warner Brothers subsidiary Reprise Records).
She then moved to Agricultural and Mechanical Records but left the label without having released an album. Dexter"s sophomore album, Listen, was released independently in 2008.
Dexter also co-wrote "Walk Like a Manitoba", the theme song to the short-lived National Broadcasting Company television series The Playboy Club.
Dexter made her feature film debut in Deliver Us from Eva (2003). She was later approached by playwright David East. Talbert, who recruited her to star as the female lead character, Tyme Prentice, in his musical Love in the Nick of Tyme (opposite Morris Chestnut).
From the age of 9 to 14, Dexter was a member of local girl group Tristar.
