Terumasa Ikeda was born in 1564. He was the son of Nobuteru.
Terumasa Ikeda fought alongside his father in the attack on Hanakuma Castle in Settsu Province, over which he ruled thereafter (1580). Two years later he followed the army of Nobunaga Oda which subdued the Take- das (1582). Upon the death of his father, he succeeded to the ancestral property and ably defended Ogaki Castle in Gifu Pre¬fecture and in return was made castellan of Gifu Castle (1584). He then joined Hideyoshi Hashiba (Toyotomi) in attack¬ing Ota Castle (1585) and distinguished himself a^ain in the Battle of Odawara for which he was granted a fief of 150,000 koku of rice in Yoshida (now Okazaki City) (1590). Later he joined Hideyoshi Toyotomi and took part in the invasion of Korea (1592). After the death of Hideyoshi and when the retainers split into two factions, one led by civilians and the other by the military, he joined the latter faction together with liiyomasa Kato, Masanori Fukushima and Nagamasa Asano as leaders while the other side was led by Mitsunari Ishida and Yukinaga Konishi. While this conflict was still on he and his son Toshitaka joined the ranks of Ieyasu Tokugawa and took part in the assault on the Aizu clan (Fukushima Prefecture), and during the fight word reached him that Mitsunari had risen in revolt. With the permission of Ieyasu he hurried back and together with Masanori carried Gifu Castle in the course of the Sekigahara-no-eki (1600). Earlier after the death of his wife, Hideyoshi arranged for him to marry the daughter of Ieyasu (1594) and was granted the family title of Matsudaira (1608).
