Abe Muneto was born in 1032. Called Saburo Torinomi, he was the son of Abe no Yoritoki, commander of a war prisoners' camp under the Imperial regime.

He rose in revolt with his elder, Sadato, in 1062. The following year, he was defeated at Koromogawa and Kuriyagawa and surrendered to Yoriyoshi Minamoto, who followed him to the capital of Kyoto. At one time he was a favorite with Yoshiie Minamoto but was exiled to Iyo (Ehime Prefecture). He became a bonze and founded the Matsuura family in Tsukushi, Kyflshu.
