Tessa Takao was born in 1905. Of Chinese descent his ancestor came to Nagasaki and after being naturalized served as an interpreter to the Shogunate.

Tessa Takao was born in 1905. Of Chinese descent his ancestor came to Nagasaki and after being naturalized served as an interpreter to the Shogunate.
He learnt the art of fencing from Nonnosuke Akamatsu.
After the great earthquake of the Ansei Era he proceeded to Uraga to study Dutch under Sakusaburo Nakayama.
Acompanied the punitive expedition to Choshii (Yamaguchi) aboard the Kaiten Maru. Later returning to Nagasaki he founded Hokokukan a school where he taught kendo judo and wrestling. He is said to have had more than 1,000 pupils.
