Menon received a Bachelor of Science degree from Womens Christian College in 1976. Three years later she earned his Master of Science degree from Christian Medical College.
Thangam was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1985 and a Doctor of Science degree in 2013 from the University of Madras.
Menon began her career as a senior demonstrator of the department of microbiology at Christian Medical College in 1979. A year later she took a position of a lecturer in Microbiology at Dr. ALM Post Graduate Institute of Basic Medical Sciences of the University of Madras. Then in 1983, Thangam became a reader in Microbiology at the same institute.
Also she worked as a professor of microbiology at Dr. ALM Post Graduate Institute of Basic Medical Sciences of the University of Madras from 1997 to 2009. Since 2009 Menon has been a professor, head of the department of microbiology and since 2012, a director at that institute.
On February 12, 1984 Thangam Menon married Raghavan Radhakrishnan. They have a child.
