Billie Joe Armstrong is an American musician, singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer of the punk rock band Green Day.
Background
Ethnicity:
His father was half English and half Italian. From his mother's side, he is of Irish, Dutch, Scottish and Cherokee (Native American) descent.
Armstrong was born on February 17, 1972, in Oakland, California, and raised in nearby Rodeo, the youngest of six children of Andrew "Andy" Marsicano Armstrong and Ollie Jackson. His father worked as a jazz musician and truck driver for Safeway Inc. to support his family. He died of esophageal cancer in September 1982, when Armstrong was 10. He has five older siblings: David, Alan, Marci, Hollie, and Anna. His mother worked as a waitress at Rod's Hickory Pit restaurant in El Cerrito, where Armstrong and Dirnt played their first gig in 1987. Armstrong's great-great-grandparents Pietro Marsicano and Teresa Nigro were Italian immigrants from Viggiano, Basilicata who moved to Boston, Massachusetts before arrived to Berkeley, California in 1869. For this, he received the honorary citizenship of Viggiano in June 2018 by mayor Amedeo Cicala.
Education
Armstrong's interest in music started at a young age. He attended Hillchest Elementary School in Rodeo, where a teacher encouraged him to record a song titled "Look for Love" at the age of five on the Bay Area label Fiat Records. After his father died, his mother married a man whom her children disliked, which resulted in Armstrong's further retreat into music. At the age of 10, Armstrong met Mike Dirnt in the school cafeteria and they immediately bonded over their love of music. He became interested in punk rock after being introduced to punk rock by his brothers. Armstrong has also cited Minneapolis-based bands The Replacements and Hüsker Dü as major musical influences.
Armstrong attended John Swett High School, also in Crockett, and later Pinole Valley High School in Pinole, California, but then dropped out to pursue his musical career.
Armstrong was still in high school when they first began playing gigs, but he eventually dropped out. He performed at small punk clubs in California with his group, which included John Kiftmayer on drums at the time. The band eventually landed a deal with Lookout! Records, an independent label, and Green Day put out their first EP in 1989.
By the release of Kerplunk in 1992, Armstrong had formed a powerful trio with Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool. The success of this album helped the band move to a major record label. Green Day made the debut on Reprise Records in 1994 with Dookie. Before long, Green Day's infectious pop-punk sound was winning over millions of fans. Their video for "Longview" got heavy play on MTV and introduced this edgy trio to the nation. The record eventually sold more than 8 million copies.
That same year, Armstrong and his band mates performed at the Woodstock festival. In keeping with their tradition of unusual stage antics, they got into a mud fight with the audience. In 1995, Green Day continued their fast and furious pace with the release of Insomniac. Armstrong also worked on side projects outside of Green Day, performing and recording with Pinhead Gunpowder.
Green Day continued to produce new music as well. Nimrod (1997) gave listeners some insights to Armstrong's personal struggles. He delved into his substance abuse issues with the song "Hitchin' A Ride." With "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)," Armstrong explored the ending of a relationship. This ballad proved to be another hit for the group, but their next album, Warning (2000), showed a marked decline in sales for the band.
Armstrong returned to top form with the rock opera American Idiot (2004), which was filled with social and political themes. He picked up a Grammy Award for the album and later adapted the work for the stage. The musical American Idiot debuted in Berkeley in 2009 and later had a run on Broadway. Armstrong went on to explore more cultural issues with 2009's 21st Century Breakdown.
After struggling with alcohol, pills and sleep problems for a long time, Armstrong seemed to come unhinged just as Green Day was set to release their most ambitious project to date. The group was preparing to issue three albums, ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tré!, within weeks of each other in late 2012. That September, Armstrong took the stage at a musical festival in Las Vegas. He performed briefly with his band before he launched into an ugly outburst. Shortly after this meltdown, Armstrong went into rehab. The band's new records were overshadowed by his personal problems and concert dates to promote the albums had to be canceled.
The following year, Armstrong released an unusual recording. He and Norah Jones teamed up to record their take on the Everly Brothers' 1958 album Songs Our Daddy Taught Us, calling their record Foreverly. The following year, Armstrong and his Green Day band mates learned that they had earned a special honor. The group will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 along with Joan Jett, Stevie Ray Vaughn and several others. Armstrong, as he told Rolling Stone magazine, is thrilled about the honor: "The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has always held something for me because my heroes were in there."
In November 2016, Green Day released their latest album, Revolution Radio. In July 2017, it was announced Armstrong formed a supergroup with Tim Armstrong of Rancid, aptly named The Armstrongs. In April 20, 2018, Armstrong released a solo album, Love Is For Losers, under the pseudonym The Longshot. Shortly after, a summer tour was announced under The Longshot name. During live performances, Armstrong is joined by Kevin Preston and David S. Field of the band Prima Donna on lead guitar and drums, respectively, and longtime Green Day live member Jeff Matika on bass.
He said: "I consider myself an agnostic, so I'm not really sure. I kind of believe that there's something possibly out there. I'm not stubborn enough to cancel that out. I believe there's a higher power somewhere. I just don't know what it is. I really like a lot of Catholic symbolism. Me and Adrienne collect a lot of crucifixes and rosary beads and stuff like that. In our house, we have a lot of candles and stuff like that."
Politics
Armstrong supported Barack Obama during the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections. In the 2016 presidential election, Armstrong supported Bernie Sanders. Following Sanders' failure to become the Democratic candidate, Armstrong later declared his support for Hillary Clinton.

Quotations:
"A guy walks up to me and asks 'What's Punk?'. So I kick over a garbage can and say 'That's punk!'. So he kicks over the garbage can and says 'That's Punk?', and I say 'No that's trendy!'"
"There's nothing wrong with being a loser, it just depends on how good you are at it."
"We pride ourselves on trying to put on the best show we can and we're not afraid to say that we happen to be the best live band in the world."
"School is practice for the future, and practice makes perfect. But nobody's perfect, so why practice?"
"Punk has always been about doing things your own way. What it represents for me is ultimate freedom and a sense of individuality."
"Music - that's been my education. There's not a day that goes by that I take it for granted."
“Ladies, if someone touches you and you don't want them to, feel free to punch them in the fucking face!”
“We put the fun in dysfunctional.”
“Don't sweat the small stuff. It's good to let chaos take over and know in your heart that everything will be alright eventually."
Personality
Armstrong has identified himself as bisexual, saying in a 1995 interview with The Advocate, "I think I've always been bisexual. I mean, it's something that I've always been interested in. I think people are born bisexual, and it's just that our parents and society kind of veer us off into this feeling of 'Oh, I can't.' They say it's taboo. It's ingrained in our heads that it's bad, when it's not bad at all. It's a very beautiful thing." In a later interview for Out magazine's April 2010 issue, Armstrong stated: "There were a lot of people who didn't accept it, who were homophobic." Armstrong continued, saying, "The fact that it's an issue is kind of phobic within itself. At some point, you gotta think, this should be something that's just accepted." Armstrong added: "I don't really classify myself as anything. And when it comes to sex, there are parts of me that are very shy and conservative." In February 2014, Armstrong again discussed his bisexuality in a Rolling Stone article about Dookie, a record which Armstrong described as "touch[ing] on bisexuality a lot." Armstrong discussed the song "Coming Clean", stating: "It was a song about questioning myself. There are these other feelings you may have about the same sex, the opposite sex, especially being in Berkeley and San Francisco then. People are acting out what they're feeling: gay, bisexual, transgender, whatever. And that opens up something in society that becomes more acceptable. Now we have gay marriage becoming recognized... I think it's a process of discovery. I was willing to try anything."

Connections
In 1990, Armstrong met Adrienne Nesser (sister of professional skateboarder Steve Nesser) at one of Green Day's early performances in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They married on July 2, 1994; the day after their wedding, Adrienne discovered that she was pregnant. Armstrong's son, Joseph Marciano "Joey" Armstrong, who was born on February 28, 1995, and currently plays drums in the Oakland-based band SWMRS. Billie Joe's second son, Jakob Danger Armstrong (born September 12, 1998), is a guitarist and singer-songwriter who released his first material online in 2015 and currently plays with the band Mt. Eddy. In a February 2014 interview with Rolling Stone, Armstrong described how his sudden marriage and having a son was "mental" saying, "I was very impulsive at that time. I think that impulsive behavior was meant to counteract the chaos in my life."
