Gerber was born in Thun, Switzerland, on April 15, 1928.
Théo Gerber attended the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel.
Gerber belonged to the avant-garde Ulysses group until 1956. Then he turned to abstract art and started painting cityscapes. In the 1960s, after having spent a lot of time in Africa, Théo Gerber limited his palette to various shades of grey. By 1965 he had lived in Paris for ten years; during this time he turned to Surrealism and his painting became apparently dynamic.
One of his most beautiful and largest oil paintings was dedicated to Africa. In August 1997 it was presented as a gift to South African President Nelson Mandela on the occasion of his official visit to Switzerland.
