Wolff graduated from the University of Wisconsin—Madison with Bachelor of Science degree in 1949, as well as with Master of Science degree a year later.
Wolff served in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946. He worked as an artist in New York City from 1950. He held a position of an art critic at the news organization Christian Science Monitor for three years from 1977. Additionally, Wolff served as a lecturer, teacher and jurist.
During his career, Wolff was also engaged in writing activity. Among his published books were The Many Masks of Modern Art, Morris Graves: Flower Paintings, and Art Criticism and Education.
