Background
Rubin, Theodore Isaac was born on April 11, 1923 in Brooklyn. Son of Nathan and Esther (Marcus) Rubin.
(If we are to become truly alive and fulfilled, Dr. Rubin ...)
If we are to become truly alive and fulfilled, Dr. Rubin feels we must all learn to love that "fool" in ourselves, that part of us that feels too much, lacks self-control, loves, hates, laughs, and cries - for only this "fool" can protect us against the raging tyrant within ourselves who continually holds us back and screams for control. This is a book of wisdom and poetic vision, yet at the same time it is refreshingly straightforward. Dr. Rubin allows us to explore the entire spectrum of human thought and emotion through his eyes - the eyes of a professional, but also a remarkably sensitive individual. The book is a collection of aphorisms that goes beyond analysis of experience and gives voice to those feelings that lie too deep for words to convey. These gentle lessons take on new dimensions with each successive reading, and eloquently express both the pain and joy of being human.

As a psychiatrist, Dr. Rubin learned that anti-Semitism and other deep-seated prejudices are non-organic diseases of the mind: malignant emotional illnesses that can be treated only by first understanding the unique psychodynamics involved. Little has been written about this aspect of bigotry. Anti-Semitism is a bold endeavor to shed light on one of humankind's most destructive and contagious illnesses, and offers hope and healing for the future.

(I am a psychoanalyst and I too believe that self-acceptan...)
I am a psychoanalyst and I too believe that self-acceptance is much more important than weight loss. I also believe that fat people must stand up against cultural pressures and in so doing promote acceptance of themselves. Weight loss must be based on personal choice if it is to be successful and constructive. Personality assets characteristic of fat people must not be surrendered or aberrated as a sacrifice to getting and staying thin. Natural proclivities, vitality, and health must be sustained. Thinning must be a benevolent and compassionate process, otherwise it is not thinning at all, but rather destructive, obsessive dieting... We must entitle ourselves to be fat and alive in North America -- either with heavy or lighter bodies -- but as we choose.

( A groundbreaking work on the psychodynamics of bigotry ...)
A groundbreaking work on the psychodynamics of bigotry and anti-Semitism. As a child, Ted Rubin could not understand why some people hated him and his family only because they were Jews. He soon discovered that other groups were hated and that bigotry was a dangerous disease that destroys its hosts as well as its victims. As a psychiatrist, Dr. Rubin learned that anti-Semitism and other deep-seated prejudices are nonorganic diseases of the mind: malignant emotional illnesses that can be treated only by first understanding the unique psychodynamics involved. Little has been written about this aspect of bigotry. Anti-Semitism is a bold endeavor to shed light on one of humankind’s most destructive and contagious illnesses, and it offers hope and healing for the future. In Anti-Semitism, Rubin lays the groundwork for a person to successfully overcome hatred, to understand where it comes from and why, and to recognize that anti-Semitism devastates people, cripples self-esteem, and is capable of engendering great suffering, horror, and murder.” Anyone who has wrestled with hatred or bigotry, either as the victim or the host, will find clarity and direction in Dr. Rubin’s eloquent analysis.

(Free yourself from destructive behavior and learn how to ...)
Free yourself from destructive behavior and learn how to break your patterns of self-hate and achieve personal fulfillment with this sympathetic and practical guide from the author of The Angry Book. Many of us know that self-destructive patterns are rooted in self-dislike, but few of us understand how to break them. In this wise and compassionate book, bestselling author and eminent psychiatrist Theodore Rubin shows us realistic ways to break these negative mental and emotional attitudes and build a strong sense of well-being and self-understanding. Dr. Rubin looks of how self-hate begins, is sustained, and eventually leads to destructive and defeating behavior—from alcoholism and drug dependency to perfectionism and fear of failure (or success). Offering practical and reassuring advice, he shows that the key to freeing yourself from these restricting emotions and habits is to find and examine the self-hate that generates them, and then to release your innate and powerful capacity for compassion. This warm, sympathetic, and ultimately practical guide to personal growth and fulfillment is timelier and more helpful than ever.
