Theresa makes work about black women and the things, that happen in their lives. She talks about the beauty of black women by means of her works. Also, with the help of her works, Chromati shows, how they get hurt and how they support, how they laugh and get dressed, literally everyday things, that she finds so special.
Rotating between digital and analogue media, Chromati's environments take place in an alternate universe, often accompanied by layered audio melodic soundscapes. Graphic elements, reminiscent of checkerboard tiles, are placed against grand arches, that create royal backdrops and mysterious doorways, which suggest an escape for women. Chromati emphasizes subtle gestures of intimacy within familial, romantic and congenial relationships.
Theresa often pulls references from her mother’s, aunties and neighbors, that she experienced during her adolescent years in Baltimore City, by focusing on the various nuances of communication within partnerships and black women as a community.
Quotations: "What’s important to me is the partnership, the community and the diversity in black women. I feel like it’s my responsibility to share these nuances in black women."
When Theresa Chromati was a kid, she had a tendency to get bored. An only child, who grew up in an artistic home on the west side of Baltimore, Chromati would fill the time by solving imaginary problems.
