In 1982, Thomas received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pomona College. Later, in 1988, he attained a Juris Doctor degree with Honors from the University of Iowa College of Law. Then, Briody continued his education at the National Criminal Defense College, graduating in 1995.
Between 1984 and 1988, Thomas served as a reporter at KGAN TV in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 1988, he was admitted to the Bar of Minnesota. During the period from 1989 till 1992, Briody served as a reporter at WLNE TV in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1990, he was accepted to the Rhode Island Bar Association.
In 1992, Briody continued serving as a reporter, this time at New England Cable News in Newton, Massachusetts, a post he held till 1993, when he moved to WBZ TV in Boston, holding the same post, and remained at the company until 1994.
Since 1993, Thomas has been acting as a private practitioner in Providence, Rhode Island, concentrating on personal injury civil rights and criminal law. Also, it was in 1993, that he began to put journalism aside and turned his attention to fiction writing.
Thomas Gately Briody is a well-known lawyer and author, who gained prominence for his "Michael Carolina" series of mystery novels, including "Rogue’s Isles", "Rogue's Justice", "Rogue's Wager" and "Rogue’s Regatta". The series is known for its humorous, but corrupt public figures.
During his career, Thomas received several awards, including the Boston Magazine Short Fiction Award for short story "FIRST" and Emmy Award for television journalism in 1992.
