Thomas Cooper earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1969 from Humboldt State University in Areata, California, and an Master of Arts in Photography from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, in 1972.
Thomas Cooper was a visiting assistant professor of art at Humboldt State University, and previously taught workshops at Sheffield Polytechnic of Sheffield (1975-1979). From 1973 to 1976 he was course director for photographic studies and senior lecturer in photography and the history of photography at Trent Polytechnic in Nottingham. In 1976 Thomas Cooper co-wrote "Paul Strand - An Appreciation" for the BBC television program Arena.
Thomas Cooper currently resides in Glasgow, Scotland, where he founded the Fine Art Photography Department at the Glasgow School of Art in 1982. He is now a senior researcher in the faculty of Fine Art, holding a Professorial role.
