Due to health conditions Mr. MacLaren established residence in Colorado in the early part of the century, and shortly after began practice in Colorado Springs. Among his early works were a number of ecclesiastical buildings, noted examples being Christ Church at Canon City, and the first Congregational at Boulder, Colo., the latter in association with Thompson D. Hetherington. In a subsequent period he formed a partnership with Charles P. Thomas and Mr. Hetherington (Thomas, MacLaren & Hetherington), a firm commissioned to design the City Hall and Ferguson Building in Colorado Springs.

James MacLaren, Thomas' brother, died of tuberculosis in October, 1890 and Thomas MacLaren had also developed symptoms of the disease.
