Thomas S. Moore was born on July 26, 1945, in Warren, Pennsylvania, United States. He is a son of Theodore R. Moore, a marine corps officer, and Helen Moore (maiden name Groves), a psychiatric social worker.
Thomas S. Moore received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College in 1967. Five years later, he obtained a Master of Arts degree from Indiana University Bloomington. It was followed by a Ph. D. from Boston University in 1979.
From the very beginning, the career of Thomas S. Moore was connected with education. So, from 1967 to 1969, Moore served as a volunteer English teacher at the secondary school in Saa, Cameroon. Then, he spent three years at the New York division of Standard & Poor's agency as an assistant to the editor at a daily news desk.
In 1972, Thomas S. Moore joined the teacher’s staff of a junior high school in Acton, Massachusetts where he taught English for a couple of years. In 1979, Moore became an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside where he worked till he occupied the same post at Denison University, Granville, Ohio in 1986. Two years later, Moore became a lecturer in sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Moore’s book, ‘The Disposable Work Force: Worker Displacement and Employment Instability in America’, was published in 1996. In addition to the volume, he has also contributed many articles and reviews to academic journals and anthologies including Social Science Quarterly, Journal of Urban Affairs, Public Administration Quarterly, Research in Politics and Society, Work and Occupations, and The Social Fabric: Dimensions and Issues among others.
