Background
He was the son of Thomas Bolton and Susannah Nelson, daughter of the Review Edmund Nelson and was educated at Norwich High School and Street Peter"s College, Cambridge, graduating Master of Arts in 1814.

He was the nephew of Admiral Horatio Nelson, hero of the Battle of Trafalgar, et cetera They had seven children:

He was High Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1834. Bolton changed his name to Nelson on inheriting the earldom.
