He was a business journalist, foreign correspondent, then deputy bureau chief at Wall Street Journal in Pittsburgh and Bonn, Germany, from 1981 to 1992, and then an author from 1992 to 1994.

Since 1994 O'Boyle has been a business editor at Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. O’Boyle wrote At Any Cost: Jack Welch, General Electric and the Pursuit of Profit (1998), a history of the tenure of the company’s chief executive officer.
