In bridging the gap between ancient texts and readers of today, contemporary biblical scholarship uses a variety of methods. One of these methods is drawn from the work of cultural anthropologists. This book shows the usefulness of such an approach to increase our understanding of the society that lies behind Old Testament stories and to shed light on some of the more puzzling features of those stories, such as holy men who heal and resuscitate the dead.

Thomas William Overholt was born on August 9, 1935, in Bucyrus, Ohio, United States.
Overholt graduated from Heidelberg College with a bachelor's degree in 1957. He then also received a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Chicago Theological Seminary in 1961 and a master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1963. He obtained his doctorate from the same university in 1967.
Overholt started his career as a visiting instructor in religion at Heidelberg College in 1963. He then became a professor of religion and chairperson at Yankton College and worked there till 1975.
Since 1975, Overholt has held the position of professor of philosophy at the University of Wisconsin, in Stevens Point.
