Thomas Edward Patton was born on May 17, 1954, in Sacramento, California, United States. He is the son of Edward Clyde and Joan (Dall) Patton.
Thomas Patton studied commercial art at Oregon State University, Corvallis (1972-1974), then took his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute (1976). He received a Master of Arts in Photography from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, in 1977.
Thomas Patton has taught at the University of New Mexico (1977, 1978) and at Millersville State College, Millersville, Pennsylvania (1978). Working in color and black-and-white, the photographer is primarily concerned with spatial interests. He says his images "all explore relationships between a focal point and its environment, using content devoid of specific social connotations."
