Tony Eprile was born in South Africa in 1955 to Jewish immigrant parents. He grew up in Johannesburg in a home where his parents actively worked against apartheid, the violence of which tends to inform all of his fiction.
Tony Eprile studied at Connecticut College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Later he received a Master of Arts degree from Brown University.
Tony Eprile immigrated to the United States in 1972 and later began his career as an educator at Northwestern University, Bennington College, and Skidmore College in 2003-04. He also was a visiting Writer at Skidmore College, Williams College, Literature Faculty, Bennington College, Wesleyan University, University of Iowa Graduate Writers Workshop. He served as an Assistant Professor at Northwestern University.
Eprile wrote his first book “Temporary Sojourner, and Other South African Stories” in 1989, “The Persistence of Memory”, was published in 2004. He also was a contributor of short stories and poetry to periodicals, including Tarpaulin Sky Prose, Booklist, Jewish Week, Kirkus Reviews, Library Journal, Newsday, New York Times, New York Times Book Review, Publishers Weekly and Washington Post Book World.
Tony Eprile received National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, 1994 and 1983 and Fellowships at Yaddo, MacDowell, and Djerassi Arts Colonies. He also earned Ingram Merrill Foundation Grant, Shane Stevens Fellowship in Fiction, Bread Loaf Writers Conference. Tony was a Nominee for Dublin International IMPAC Prize and the Sunday Times (South Africa) Fiction Prize.
Tony Eprile obtained New York Times notable book citation in 1989 for Temporary Sojourner, and Other South African Stories and won grants from National Endowment for the Arts.
